Mrs. Tanner’s Class

September 13, 2007

Reading/Language Arts:

We are reading many books about pets. Using the “Handwriting without Tears” program, we are using big lines, little lines, little curves, and big curves to make letters.  This week our focus is F, D, and we will learn to make Magic C. Each day we follow 5 picture steps to write and illustrate during Writer’s Workshop. Writing our names is a big focus right now.  We look for letters in the morning message I write the class each morning.

Math:

We are doing mystery bag to enhance our questioning, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.  This also reinforces looking for common attributes. Counting to 30 and writing numbers to 10 is a skill we are working on daily.  During calendar we are looking for patterns, counting, writing numbers, and learning the days of the week.

Religion:

During our pet theme we are reading Noah’s Ark.  We will learn about God’s promise.  Before snack we make the Sign of the Cross and say a before meal prayer.  Ask us to say it for you.  The Glory Be is the next prayer we will learn.  We are also leaning that it is important to care for all God’s creatures.  We are doing a mini service project in which we take care of God’s furry friends.  So please send in dog or cat food.  A lady who cares for orphaned dogs will send our class pictures of the animals we help.

Science/Social Studies:

In addition to the other pets in our room, we now have 3 guppies.  We learn a lot about God’s creatures from all our classroom pets.  We will graph our favorite pet.  The 3rd Annual Pet Parade is next week (info attached). Local vet and SPS parent, Dr. Patricia Stewart, will talk to us about her job.  We are learning to follow a schedule and get into a routine.

Art/Movement/Cooking:  We made fish using a variety of materials.  We will create more art this week as we look at Matisse fish and paint our own renditions.  After reading Swimmy we cooked up some blue Jell-O and a gummy fish. Puppy chow and cat cupcakes are on the menu next.  Cooking is great for following directions, reading, cooperation, and especially eating.
