2nd Grade Newsletter

September 13th – 27th

Dear Families,

The second grade boys and girls are working hard and learning many new things.  Here is a brief outline of what the students will be doing the next few weeks.

Religion-           The students will be learning about Scripture by identifying that Psalms are songs of prayer in the Bible.  They will also discover how Jesus reveals God’s love and mercy.  Each week in the homework packet there are pages that coincide with what we are learning.

Math-               In this unit, your child will explore numbers and use problem-solving strategies. He or she will solve addition and subtraction problems, skip count, and identify even and odd numbers.

Your child will use a 200 Chart to identify patterns and show numbers within intervals. He or she will explore addition and subtraction using a 200 Chart, manipulatives, and a calculator. The activities in this unit will help your child bring meaning to written numbers.

Help your child with the concepts in this unit by playing the following game:

•Play I Am Thinking of a Number. Give players one clue, such as “I am thinking of a number that is less than 50.” Players ask yes or no questions that will help them identify the number (for example, “Is it greater than 25?” or “Is it between 20 and 30?”). The player who names the correct number thinks of the next number for others to figure out.

Reading-          Please be sure your child is reading his/her library book each week and taking AR tests.  The students will be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books about insects.

Please look at the back of this page for the Social Studies parent speaker schedule.

Sincerely,

Ms. Burns, Ms. Jett, Mrs. Grant, and Mrs. Fitz
