Mrs. Ellermann’s ECLC Class

We have had a good and lively start to the year.  Our main goal is to establish a daily routine.  The children are learning their school schedule along with the basics like standing in line, raising their hand, doing daily chores, and getting along with each other.  The room is divided into Centers:  dramatic play, blocks, observation table, science, math and manipulatives, reading, writing, art, and sensory play.  During Center Time the children can either choose to participate in one of these stations or get involved in a special activity focused on a theme for the day.

Language:  Our main theme for last week was bubbles.  We read a book called Show and Tell about a little boy and magic bubbles and learned a song about a turtle who ate soap.  We also focused on the letter “B” and brainstormed other words that start with that letter.  At the writing table the children could practice writing or tracing the word “Bubbles.”

Math:  We discussed the shape of bubbles (circle), made a bubble collage out of construction paper, and have begun using tabulation when we vote.

Science:  The children blew colored bubbles through a straw in a cup, saw the reaction between Borax and glue when making goop, and played in baking soda, food coloring, and vinegar.  The children are also bringing in nature items for our observation table which include dead bugs, shells, nuts, and rocks.

Art:  We mixed food coloring and water to make all different colors.  We experimented with both water colors and tempura paint.

Religion:  We are learning to sit quietly in chapel while hearing a Bible story read by one of our church friends.  This week the story was on David and Goliath.  In addition, the children will bring a story home along with an activity they can choose to do and bring back in their weekly folder.

Physical:  We have danced with bubbles and music.  Sr. Sheila, our music teacher, has taught us the “Freeze” song.  We have also played bean bag toss and had our first chance to be in the Legacy Center basement on a rainy day.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
