THIRD GRADE NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 4-14

Dear Parents,

These first few weeks have really flown by!  The students are adjusting smoothly to the third grade.  We are all very pleased.  Below are some of the topics, skills, and concepts that the third graders will be presented during the next ten days.

RELIGION—For the next two weeks the students will read and discuss Mary and the trust she showed in God.  The fourth chapter will introduce other women of faith to the third graders.  Encourage your third grader to participate at Mass on Sundays.  We are emphasizing this skill this year to reinforce our theme of “Come to the Table.”

READING—The third graders will read two Caldecott winning books, Song and Dance Man and Owl Moon.  The skills will include troublesome words, compare and contrast, sequencing, and book parts.  The students will also be asked to write a story using sequence as the skill to practice.

SCIENCE—The students will continue the study of living things through the use of hands-on observations of plants and using a microscope to look at cell samples. After that study, the third graders will begin to look at the world of animals.

MATH—Please see the back of this letter to learn about the next unit in our math curriculum.  During this time period the students will be finishing up the unit about sampling and data collection and beginning the new unit.  Continue nightly study of math facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES—The study of maps will continue with the skill of identifying map symbols and using a grid to locate places on a map.  The students will have a unit test the week of September 10, along with a vocabulary quiz over the words presented in this unit.  The third graders will bring home their social studies vocabulary to study during that week.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.  We are looking forward to another fun-filled and challenging two weeks.
